PREFACE

For more years than I like to acknowledge, I have been collecting strange and wondrous items regarding the church and its leadership for what I have called my "Eclectic Notebooks." These "bloopers", mild fun poked at ministers, cute (and wise) comments from little kids, notes regarding retirement, parenting and grandparenting, have found their way into these notebooks.

I carry at least one of these notebooks with me wherever I have a speaking date — at a church, or a dinner, or rally, or service club or whatever the assignment might be. Very often one of these "ice breakers" fits the occasion beautifully — and helps "warm up" the audience.

Over the years, many people have asked for copies of these humorous items (and some a bit more sobering), but I have declined, stating that some day I might include them in a book. Well — that day has come — and here they are! I really hope you can enjoy them and can make helpful use of them.

As a matter of fact, with my becoming "Famous" or "infamous" because of this kind of humor, many friends keep sending me items for my notebooks. (Interestingly, I find the most of these I already have!)

I love the church, am very active in my home church as well as in various parachurch ministries, and hold in highest regard my preacher friends. But I find enjoyment in mildly poking fun at it and at them. I have come to the conclusion that our wonderful God has a delightful sense of humor. I can almost hear Him chuckle as He observes our foibles and the way we sometimes mangle truth.

I have found myself not immune from the kind of experience you will see in these pages. And, perhaps, you will recognize similar experiences you have had. I hope so!

The material was gathered together and collated to be enjoyed in a spirit of healthy fun and laughter.

As my waitress friend at my coffee shop says — "Enjoy!"

He was a board member for dozens of Christian organizations including Azusa Pacific University and assisted religious and political leaders in 136 countries where he stood as a model of godly leadership.
