Bibliography
Biographical
Many biographies of Moody have been issued, some during his life-time. After Moody's death in 1899 six were issued, mostly eulogistic. This was the prevailing mood during the first fifty years of this century, with the exception of a few more critical works. The following among many have been read and consulted and are mentioned as among the best.
1900. Moody, W. R. : The life of Dwight L. Moody, by his son. New York and London: Morgan and Scott, 1900; New York: Fleming H. Revell Co., 1900. This is the official authorized edition covering the major events of Moody's life and work. It is sympathetic and helpful, without historical perspective.
1930. Moody, William R. : D. L. Moody. New York: Macmillan & Co. Moody's son wrote this second volume about his father. This is a new edition of the first, and is entirely rewritten. Many estimates of Moody had been made in the intervening years. The evangelist is now seen as an educator, and as a man of affection, yet judicious restraint.
1963. Pollock, J. D.: Moody: A biographical portrait of the pacesetter in modern mass of evangelism. New York: Macmillan Co., 1963. This more recent study is based upon careful enquiry into old records and papers now available to supplement earlier biographies. It is comprehensive, but not altogether setting Moody in the historical perspective, but not altogether setting Moody in the historical perspective, and is still somewhat eulogistic.
1969. Findlay, James F. Jr. : Dwight L. Moody: American Evangelist, 1837-1899. Chicago and London: The University of Chicago Press, 1969. This is possibly the finest thus far of an attempted definitive study of Moody based upon research into all available data. It assesses both conservative and liberal points of view concerning him and evangelism. Now we see Moody within the context of the social, cultural, and theological ferment of his age with a sure place in American and British history.
Published Works of Moody
During Moody's lifetime newspapers reported his sermons and addresses verbatim. Later, enterprising religious leaders published selections in book form with sketches of his life and ministry. In this list appended there are some now out of print, and no attempt has been made to choose any selection from other edited works, only from those published under the name of Moody himself. Thus the bibliography is limited and selected for this Treasury.
